Home schooling is becoming more and more popular as parents try to meet the needs of children who do not fit in to the mainstream schooling system. The current growth rate is about 7 to 15 percent per year in Australia. In fact, almost two million children are now learning at home, and many of these students do well on standardised tests. They are also welcome at colleges and universities and have a reputation for being focused on their studies. As adults, they are known to be reliable employees.

Many parents with children with disabilities choose to home school, as it is difficult for schools to meet their unique and individual needs. From the curriculum to the set-up of classrooms, behaviour expectations and assessments, the education system struggles with supporting individuals outside the neurotypical average. • Educational freedom

Students who are homeschooled will have the option to study and learn material that is more targeted towards their learning style and needs. Though parents still need to follow the curriculum, the activities, setting, assessments and timing can be tailored to the individual.

• Physical freedom

Many students with disabilities have a hard time coping with the requirements of school such as sitting and listening for extended periods, working in groups, completing mundane activities, and working within noisy, busy environments. So, when they leave the school system, they may feel freer since their lives are no longer revolving around school hours, classrooms, homework, and they can even visit parks and museums during the week.  This means their lives and education may be more aligned with their interests.

• Well-Rested Kids

Sleep is essential to the emotional and physical well-being of kids. Many students find that they are not getting enough sleep due to the rigid demands of school, particularly those with autism and/or sleep disorders. Home schooling may provide your child more time to rest instead of waking up early for school, finding themselves tired all day, and then struggling to sleep late at night. Perhaps if your child sleeps well in the morning, their schoolwork could be completed in the afternoon. This will give them ample time to prepare their body and mind, so they can focus well on their study sessions.​​

When do Parents Need Support with Home Education?

Many parents have other commitments such as work, other children, self-care activities and other commitments. Many parents also report that their child works more effectively with a teacher, as they become frustrated with their parents, and vice versa. When there is too much on your plate, you may need the support of a qualified and experienced teacher or tutor.
 
In fact, when a tutor is present, they can be completely devoted to your child and their educational needs.  They will also be able tailor their lessons based on your child’s interests, their current knowledge, their learning preferences, and the curriculum. ​

Some of our tutors can offer their support with home schooling, particularly those with a background in disability. Many individuals with disabilities may be able to access a tutor using part of their support worker budget of their NDIS funding.
