Our rigorous group VCE study skills and exam preparation tuition program in Melbourne provides an alternative option to students who feel that private tutoring is not the right option for them. It is a budget friendly option, at only $50 per 1 hour session. It can also be used in conjunction with private tutoring, to give students an even more extensive grasp on the key subject matter.  

As a teacher of Mathematical Methods, I always felt rushed to get through all of the content. I was always running out of time whilst trying to explain difficult concepts, and had no where near enough time to spend on revision and exam techniques. This program was developed with one thought in my mind- if I had an extra session each week with my classes, what would I focus on and how would I get the most out of my students?

Ideally, maximising your child's exposure to mathematical concepts through both group tuition and private tutoring would be considered the ultimate combination for all VCE Maths students. However, there are individual cases in which group tutoring sessions would not be suitable or recommended.

Group sessions are a good option for students who would like to deepen their understanding and improve their results through the lessons offered. These students are working through their units satisfactorily at school, and are proficient in the fundamental skills, but have been disappointed in their results to this point. They know they can achieve better results, as they may keep making the same 'silly' mistakes on assessments. They need a more rigorous and targeted program to help them utilise their existing skill set within worded and application questions. Maths group Tuition classes can give students the edge they need to get the results they desire through targeting a range of general concepts, misconceptions and techniques.

I find that these general ideas are more effectively targeted through formal group sessions, as students are forced to keep pace with the lecture, and are pushed to think for themselves more so than in a one-on-one lesson. They are given extended learning opportunities through the other students in the class, as they ask questions and explain their thought processes. Students complete exam questions under exam conditions in a formal environment, without a tutor following and correcting their every move. Private tuition can sometimes mislead students in this way, as they become overconfident in their ability in the presence of the tutor, but struggle to work independently. The structure of these sessions allows students to spend the whole session working on the target concept, technique or idea in depth. Students have more of an opportunity to independently discover new strategies which work well for them and solve problems effectively.  And all the while, a qualified and experienced teacher is there to help guide and scaffold their understanding.

Our teachers focus on the following areas:
Exam preparation- Teachers analyse past exams and assessment reports, thus determining concepts and question styles that students tend to struggle with most. They design this component of their program around difficult questions, giving in depth explanations, facilitating discussions and breaking down questions into manageable components.

Study techniques- This is a major component in VCE success in every subject. If you are aware of how to prepare for assessments, you will improve your chances of reaching your ATAR potential. Our teachers demonstrate many different revision techniques, including creating tables, organising reference books, practicing difficult concepts, creating flow charts and linking similar ideas in various ways.  

Common misconceptions- Having taught Maths Methods for many years, our teachers have marked hundreds of SAC’s and exams. We know where the majority of students are lacking in their skills and knowledge and how we can assist them in correcting and deepening their understanding.

Reference book structure and content- The reference book can be used in many SAC's and in one of the exams. Many students do not know how to write or use a reference book effectively. Many pack it with far too much content, and others use someone else's book from a previous year. What students must understand, is that the process of creating the reference book is one of the best forms of revision they can do. Summarising and organising ideas, recreating examples and writing important concepts multiple times allows your brain to process and learn in a deep and meaningful way.  

Teachers will focus lessons on concepts that are difficult in general, but will also work with the group and allow the abilities and interests within each class to direct the lesson content moving forward.
